Dog-friendly beaches on Bolivar Peninsula

Leash rules, where to go, where to skip, and how to get your pup across on the ferry — from a Crystal Beach house where dogs are part of the crew.

Bolivar is one of the easiest stretches of the Texas coast to bring a dog. The Gulf beach runs for miles, you can walk or drive right onto the sand, and nobody looks twice at a wet retriever. From our house it's about a 4-minute walk to the beach, so most mornings start with a leash, a coffee and a long, sandy stroll.

Here's what we tell friends before they bring their dogs down.

The rules (short version)

Bolivar's beaches are managed by Galveston County, and the county's beach laws are simple:

  • Dogs must be leashed and kept under control at all times.
  • No glass on the beach, and stay off the dunes — they're protected by law.
  • Vehicles on the sand are limited to 15 mph, and pedestrians (and their dogs) always have the right of way.

Bring bags and pick up after your dog. It keeps the beach nice for everybody, and it keeps dogs welcome here.

Where to go

Straight from the house

The easiest option is the one out the front door: a 4-minute walk to the sand. Walking onto the beach doesn't need a permit or a parking sticker, so you can just clip on the leash and go.

Crystal Beach Road access

About 2.4 miles (5 minutes) from the house, the Crystal Beach Road access has the county's permanent restrooms and rinse stations, which is handy when your dog has rolled in something they're very proud of.

Driving on the beach

You can drive along Bolivar's beach without a permit. If you park on the beach, your vehicle needs a Bolivar Beach Parking Sticker: $10, good through December 31 (it's $5 if you buy early in January or February). Local vendors around the peninsula sell them, and beach attendants on the sand can sell you one too. They take cash and cards. The county also keeps two free parking areas: the western one runs from Rettilon Road east to the first washout, and the eastern one runs from about 2.5 miles east of Rollover Pass to the Chambers County line.

Fort Travis Seashore Park

Toward the ferry end of the peninsula, about 12 miles (around 17 minutes) from the house, Fort Travis is a 70-acre county park with old fortifications, picnic areas, a playground and restrooms. Dogs are welcome on a leash, as in all county parks. It's open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the gate closes automatically, so don't cut it close.

Bring the dog. We mean it.

Dogs are welcome at our Crystal Beach house, 4 minutes on foot from the sand.

The one place to skip with your dog

Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary is a world-class birding spot at the west end of the peninsula, but it's not a dog walk. Birds Houston (formerly Houston Audubon) asks visitors not to bring dogs past the vehicle barrier, because shorebirds see any dog as a predator and flush, even from the best-behaved pup. Their nature sanctuaries don't allow dogs at all. Enjoy the beach on either side and leave the flats to the birds.

Taking your dog on the ferry

The free Galveston–Port Bolivar ferry is dog-friendly with one big rule from TxDOT: pets other than service animals have to stay inside your vehicle for the whole crossing. Engines also have to be turned off once you're parked on board. On a hot day, keep that in mind: the crossing is around 20 minutes, plus loading, and there's often a line before that. Go early or late in the day in summer, and have water ready. More on that in our Bolivar ferry guide.

Galveston beaches with a dog

If you head over to the island, Galveston's Stewart Beach allows pets on a leash as long as you clean up after them. It charges a per-vehicle entry fee, and alcohol isn't allowed there.

Dog-at-the-beach tips from our house

  • Hot sand is real. Midday sand in summer can burn paws. Go early or late.
  • Bring fresh water. Dogs will drink salt water if you let them, and you'll both regret it.
  • Rinse before you come in. The house has an outdoor shower for exactly this, and keeping sand outside matters for the septic system.
  • Check the pet policy before you book. It's in our FAQ.
